Composing in the Classroom

A Workshop for Teachers

Level: Grades 7-12
This workshop guides teachers through the process of delivering a structured composition lesson, from initial steps to final evaluation of student work. No experience necessary!

During the workshop teachers create their own composition. By going through the process themselves. teachers will be better able to assist students. Activities that are used in this workshop leave no on behind but hold no one back. Those that think they can’t compose, discover that they can!

Duration: 9:30am to 3:00 pm

Workshop Goals: To provide teachers with insights, knowleges and skill to teach mucis composition in a classroom setting

Topics:

  • The importance of musical models
  • Linking Music Theory Concepts
  • Paper or software?
  • Developing a simple melody
  • Showcasing, discussion and reflection
  • Extensions: Going beyond the melody
  • Topic Activities:

  • Listening & discussion of a musical model
  • Quick tips on note entry in notation software
  • Creating an 8-measure melody
  • Showcasing, listening, reflection and discussion of projects
  • Extending a project
  • Evaluation of projects
  •  

    Dates: Monday August 30 or Saturday, September 25, 2010

    Location: St. Michael’s College School, Bathurst & St. Clair, Toronto

    Cost: $100.00 per person, free to Breezin’ Thru Theory subscribers.
